Definition of Psychosocial: Human beings are social entities and almost all people live in societies. Human lives have both psychological aspects (thoughts, emotions and behaviors) and social aspects - relations to family, society, culture, norms and values. The interrelation between psychological aspects and social aspects is referred to as psychosocial. If and when a society accepts a person’s behavior, s/he can adjust in the society and show evidence of good daily functioning. However, if a person is unable to balance the psychological and social aspects of his or her life, it impacts on his/her thinking, emotions and behavior and can lead to psychosocial problems (lack of concentration, fear, guilt etc) and the development of dysfunctional behaviour. This can be clearly seen in the figure below:

Psychosocial Counselling:

Counselling is a planned intervention between the client and counsellor/helper to assist the client to alter, improve, or resolve his/her present behaviour, difficulties, or discomfort. It is a process of helping the client to discover the coping mechanisms that he/she found useful in the past, how they can be used or modified for the present situation, and how to develop new coping mechanisms. The psychosocial approach to counselling focuses on the well-being of individuals in relation to their environment, seeing them as part of bigger social units such as families and communities. Psychosocial counselling also focuses on the understanding of the relationship between individuals and their environment; thus, client’s problems are seen in relation to his/her surroundings. This approach widens holistic understanding of psychological and social processes. The psychosocial approach to counseling emphasises psychosocial well-being and empowerment (gaining insight into one’s problem and being actively involved in addressing one’s suffering and trying to change it) of the patient.

Stages in Counselling:

The six stages of counselling are applied “Identification”, “Beginning”, “Assessment”, “Formulation” “Implementation” and “Ending”. The arrows on the diagram below, which is taken from Sahara’s Counselling Manual, represent the movement through these stages.

Medical Consultancy: The job of a medical consultant is to provide medical advice for a variety of purposes. A medical consultant is someone who is very knowledgeable about the medical community, procedures, and medical facts. Medical consultants may have worked previously as nurses, doctors, or other healthcare specialists. A medical consultant works as an advisor to the healthcare community, providing help tailored to meet the needs of each individual practice.

One job of a medical consultant is to review books and movie or television scripts. They check for the accuracy of medical facts, and suggest any changes that may need to be made. Medical consultants may also help plan or review advertisements for medical facilities or products. They review for accuracy and to assure that the ad targets the right audience

Medical consultants may also work with insurance agencies, helping them to better serve their clients by providing medical assessments that speed up the claims process.

A medical consultant, or a team of consultants, can be hired to help with almost any need that a medical professional may have. They are available to help strategize marketing campaigns, or advise in financial matters. Consultants have a very important position in the medical community, allowing doctors to concentrate on their medical practices, without needing to worry about all of the extra details. A medical consultant team is an invaluable tool for healthcare facilities.
